MIKE TOOLE ON THE EVOLUTION OF VIDEO ROOMS AT ANIME CONVENTIONS

Anime News Network columnist Mike Toole has an interesting column on the evolution of Anime Convention video rooms over the past three decades. Here is an excerpt.

Here's how the anime video room worked in its infancy. A single planner with the convention (or maybe a few people) would dig through their rarefied stack of videotapes and program a schedule. Maybe the anime video room would only be open on Saturday from 10am to midnight, or maybe we'd be really lucky and the thing would run 24 hours for the duration of the con. The schedule would be published (or maybe just posted on the door, if the con couldn't afford space in the program for it), fans would pile in, and they'd crane their necks and strain their eyes to look at something that, generally speaking, was this...

A READER SPEAKS AND KEV RESPONDS!

Robotech Reporter reader "Jon" has a question about the DVD box set from A&E Home Entertainment.

Hi! Occasional visitor, first-time commenter.

Do you have any add'l info on the "alternate versions of select episodes"? I've noticed a handful of episodes in my Legacy DVD collection are different than my old VHS copies recorded from TV (e.g., scene between Rick and Minmei in Force of Arms is retooled).

Any chance these "alternate versions" include the older edits?
And here is my response.
Hi Jon,

Yes! The "alternate versions of select episodes" is the original music mix used for Robotech episodes 1-14 (including "Force of Arms") as part of a running fix.. Different music was used in different scenes in eps 1-14 and its how many of us first saw the show.

Since no effort was made the catalog this original mix it took us many years, with the help of several fans private Robotech collections, to find VHS tapes with this alternate mix.

I hope that answers your question.
